Senior Dog Care

As dogs age, they experience many changes in their health and age-related health issues may occur.  We love your aging companions and want their senior years to be as healthy and happy as possible. We recommend pro-active, preventative senior dog care so that we may catch health issues early.

For all dogs aged 7 and older, All Creatures Veterinary Services recommends:

  • Bi-annual wellness exam
  • Comprehensive blood test (CBC, thyroid)
  • Other tests that may be required, such as urine test, ultrasound, blood pressure monitoring or eye pressure check.

The size and breed of your dog will have a lot to do with their life expectancy, but in general most dogs are considered to be a “senior dog” at age seven.  While many dogs appear healthy in their senior years, some dogs become skilled at hiding their illness and pain. Specialized senior care exams and diagnostic testing can help us determine the health of your dog even if they seem very healthy.

Some common age related health issues include:

  • Changes in your pet’s appetite or water consumption.
  • Dental disease resulting in pain, a decreased appetite, or possible infection.
  • Changes in your pet’s weight.
  • Noticeable orthopedic problems associated with osteoarthritis such as lameness
  • Changes in or loss of hearing and/or eyesight.
  • Behavioral changes.
  • Fluctuating bowel or urinary habits.
  • Evident development of lumps and bumps, and/or other skin/coat changes.
  • Large breed dogs are predisposed to tumors of internal organs that can often be detected before clinical signs appear through early screening tests.
  • Coughing or decreased exercise tolerance can be associated with heart disease.

Working closely with us to devise a health plan that is best for your senior dog begins with your observed symptoms at home and a dialogue with us at your dog’s wellness exam.  Together we will provide your dog the very best possible quality of life during his or her senior years.

Please give us a call today to schedule a wellness exam for your senior dog.
