Senior Cat Care

As cats age, they experience many changes in their health and age-related health issues may occur.  Medical conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease, thyroid disease and dental disease are common problem. Cats are masters at hiding illness, so be especially observant at home if you have a senior cat and discuss any changes you notice with us.

We love your aging companions and want their senior years to be as healthy and happy as possible. We recommend pro-active, preventative senior cat care so that we may catch health issues early.

For all cats aged 7 and older, All Creatures Veterinary Services recommends:

  • Bi-annual wellness exam
  • Comprehensive blood test (CBC, Serum chemistries, thyroid and urinalysis)
  • Fecal exam
  • Other tests that may be required, such as urine test, ultrasound, and blood pressure monitoring or eye pressure check.

In general most cats are considered to be a “senior cat” at age seven.  Specialized senior care exams and diagnostic testing can help us determine the health of your cat even if they seem very healthy.  Some common age related health issues include:

  • Changes in your cats eating or drinking behavior.
  • Dental disease resulting in pain, a decreased appetite, or possible infection.
  • Changes in your cat’s weight, including obesity or weight loss despite good appetites.
  • Noticeable orthopedic problems associated with osteoarthritis such as lameness, resistance to jump or just slowing down.
  • Changes in or loss of hearing and/or eyesight.
  • Behavioral changes.
  • Fluctuating bowel or urinary habits.
  • Skin or coat changes, or appearance of lumps or bumps.

Working closely with us to devise a health plan that is best for your senior cat begins with your observed symptoms at home and a dialogue with us at your cat’s wellness exam.  Together we will provide your cat the very best possible quality of life during his or her senior years.  Our goal is the same as yours. We want your pet to live the longest healthiest life possible.
