Puppy Care

Congratulations on Your New Puppy! We Can't Wait to Meet the Newest Addition to Your Family.

Everyone at All Creatures Veterinary Services are waiting to meet your new puppy! We are eager to assist you with getting your puppy started on their journey to a healthy life.  It is important to have your new puppy examined as soon as possible. Initial puppy exams are important to verify that your new pet has is healthy and is free of birth defects, parasites and infectious disease.  Our veterinarians will make sure they receive a good healthy start through the proper use of vaccinations, parasite protection, food choices and behavior recommendations.

What to expect on your puppy’s initial visit:

  • Comprehensive physical exam.
  • Intestinal parasite screening
  • Intestinal parasite worming
  • Development of a vaccination program based on your puppy’s lifestyle
  • Necessary vaccines or vaccine boosters
  • Heartworm preventative recommendations
  • Recommendations for flea and tick prevention
  • Behavior and housetraining recommendations
  • Nutritional counseling

For your first puppy visit, we request that you bring the following:

  • Your puppy on a leash
  • All paperwork pertaining to the previous care of your puppy including all previous immunizations, deworming, medications and any veterinary records you may have
  • A fresh stool sample (less than 12 hours old)

When you pick up your puppy, remember to ask what brand of food your puppy was eating and the feeding schedule. Replicate both of these until your first puppy visit with us.   We will discuss your puppy’s breed, anticipated lifestyle and nutritional needs with you during your first puppy visit.

Preparing for Your New Puppy

Pre-puppy planning is important. It is best to purchase supplies (for example, food and water bowls, chew toys, grooming supplies, bedding, collar and leash, identification tag, crate and gates) before you bring your puppy home. Pre-puppy shopping allows you to shop for supplies without the pressure of the puppy immediately needing the items.

You'll need to puppy-proof the area where he or she will spend most of his or her time the first few months. Once you think you've completely puppy-proofed, lie on the floor and look around once more to get a puppy's-eye view. If you have children, please remind them not to overwhelm the puppy the first day.

The staff at All Creatures is dedicated to make sure that you are comfortable with the puppy experience.  There are no inappropriate questions, please don’t hesitate to call us with any question regarding your puppy’s health or wellness.
